Derby Party in Derby

Sunday, June 5, 2016
As many of you know from previous posts, I love the Kentucky Derby and all its pomp and circumstance. In recent years, the Kentucky Derby has always been the evening before the Prairie Fire Half Marathon which dampens any thoughts of a Mint Julep fueled celebration. This year though, the half marathon was scheduled the Sunday before Derby Day which meant we were finally having a Derby party!

We sent out invitations asking our guests to ‘Dress in their Derby best,’ and our friends and family didn’t disappoint. We served up lots of tasty treats including these darling horse cookies, and Mike kept busy churning out julep after julep.

For those who don’t enjoy whiskey, we whipped up a batch of the Oaks Lily. The official drink of the Kentucky Oaks. Guests made ‘bets’ for Win, Place, and Show, and we all gathered around the TV to watch the fastest two minutes in sports! I loved seeing everyone in their hats, bowties, and brightly colored dresses. We had a great time with our friends and family, and many of us sat on the patio sipping Kentucky bourbon into the evening in true Derby fashion.
