Paddle Board Yoga

It seems like all of a sudden SUP (stand up paddle boarding) is everywhere in Wichita. I had once tested out a friend's paddle board when we were at the lake, and I loved how much of a core workout it was.

I saw advertisements for paddle board yoga all summer and considered signing up but the class fee ($25-$30) and a busy schedule kept stopping me. My gym, the Derby Recreation Center, doesn't offer paddle board yoga regularly, but as a special event every month or so. When I saw a date in August at our local water park, I knew this was the time to give it a try.

I knew I could talk my fitness buddy, Abby, into trying it with me, too. If I was going to make a fool of myself and topple into the water mid-Vinyasa, I was definitely bringing a friend along for support - or at least to laugh with me.

I think the biggest concern I had before going to class was figuring out what to wear. When I texted Abby to ask her what she was wearing, she responded, "I was going to ask you the same thing!" I knew we were going to get wet, so I wanted a swimsuit on, but did I really want to do downward dog in front of strangers in my Billabong bikini? Not really.  

I opted for a swimsuit with running shorts and a tank over it. The swimsuit I chose to wear was not the best choice - my 'good' ones were packed for wake surfing on a lake trip we were leaving for the next day, but it worked out fine.  Class members ranged from all ages and all wore a range of outfits. Some wore just their swimsuits, others wore workout clothes, and I even saw a full-on wet suit. I guess it's whatever floats your boat, er, paddle board.

The class was a ton of fun - and much easier than I expected. The instructor walked us through the moves from the side of the pool for an hour. She did a great job of giving modifications for those of us who aren't experienced yogis (no, I am not going on my head on a paddle board).


We made it! Feelin' proud of ourselves.

I never fell off the board which surprised me. It's actually not that difficult to stay balanced on it. It is difficult enough to feel all the moves in your core though. I loved that it amped up a typically yoga class in that way.

I was also glad that I gave it a try during the summer when I could be outside in the fresh air and sunshine. The class is also held in the winter at the inside pool but taking the class in the summer was so nice.

To cover the paddle board fees, the price of just one class can be a bit pricey, but if you've never tried it before, I'd really recommend it.
